Fragmented: Memorializing Through Remnants
Spiral-bound book made of paper and vellum. The contents include written stories, photos, and a woven paper piece.
This book is a gathering of stories of grief and tangible objects, two seemingly detatched senses.
Censorship
Color paper, "The Bell Jar" book pages, repurposed 1969 book cover used as book board, and book tape.
The accordion fold book, Censorship, uses the process of paper weaving as a way to display the distorting effect that censorship can have. Censorship and book banning aren’t necessarily new, but the number of books banned within recent years is staggering. Book banning is an act of withholding information from citizens in an attempt to silence and suppress marginalized groups. The bright and colorful pages of this book not only act as eye-catching, but are also reminiscent of children’s storybooks, which have been affected by these bans. The words are woven with cut-up strips of "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath, which has a history of being banned back to 1977. Censorship uses bright colors, blocky letters, and simple facts to highlight the striking truth about book bans in the years 2023-2024.
